Pronunciation trap for learners: the middle e basically disappears. I hear émraude / emrod, not four clean syllables é-me-rau-de.

The bird sense is really dictionary/natural history territory. Alone, une émeraude makes me think gemstone first. In a bird book I would expect the full name, like émeraude de Porto Rico, or at least a colibri context.

Gem people use jardin for the inclusions and tiny fissures inside an emerald. So if a ring is advertised as émeraude huilée, that is not automatically fake, but it does mean no ultrasonic cleaner and no steam bath.
