Qapla' is one of the few Klingon words non-Trekkies somehow still recognize

nuqneH is the one people quote as hello, but even that is more what do you want. Klingon small talk is not trying to be cozy

the apostrophe being a real consonant makes Klingon spelling so unforgiving

Not the same as maj or majQa'. Those are more like good or well done. Qapla' is the wish or shout of success, not just approval after someone did a neat thing.

For pronunciation, the Q is made far back in the mouth, not like English k. Then stress the last syllable and actually close the word with the little catch from the apostrophe. kap-LA is the tourist version.

the final catch is the bit English speakers swallow, ironicly

The English borrowed form is a bit looser than the Klingon word. In a Star Trek quote or a fan sign-off, Qapla' can mean something like good luck, but when you gloss the Klingon word, success is the clean translation.

Suffixes attach after the final apostrophe, you dont erase it first. Qapla'wIj is my success, and Qapla'mey can be successes. It looks weird if you are thinking of the apostrophe as punctuation, but Klingon does not treat it that way.

Tiny grammar trap: Qap is the verb succeed or work. Qapla' is the noun success. So I Qapla' is English fandom talk, not a Klingon sentence. If you want I succeed, you are looking for jIQap.

dont treat Qapla' as ordinary hello. Fans use it like a greeting all the time, but the word itself is success, and as an exclamation it lands more like good luck, victory, or a farewell with some punch.

Please keep the capital Q. In Klingon romanization Q and q are not style variants, they are different consonants. The apostrophe at the end is also a letter, basically the glottal stop, so Qapla and qapla' are both off in different ways.

this is the mistake I see most, people think the Q is just dramatic capitalization
