this word is weirdly useful because tone changes it from 'really?' to 'honestly, no'

La neta patineta sounds like something my cousins say when they are clowning around, not normal class Spanish

Spain note from my side: people may catch it from Mexican TV or TikTok, but it is not a Spain-Spanish everyday word. If you want the same reaction there, ¿en serio? is safer.

Dont translate every la neta as 'the truth'. At the front of a sentence it can be closer to honestly, especially when the next thing is an opinion: la neta no me gustó.

If someone says esos tacos son la neta, they are not saying the tacos are honest lol. It means they are excellent or the real thing.

One register thing: its casual but not dirty. My Mexican teacher used it with classmates, then switched to la verdad with older relatives and in emails.

In business Spanish the adjective is boring and literal: utilidad neta, renta neta, ganancia neta. No la there, because it is modifying the noun, not saying the slang phrase.

Neta que sí is another pattern worth showing. It is not just ¿neta? by itself, you can say neta que me fui temprano, neta que no sabía, etc. Very México.

la neta del planeta is a real phrase, but it sounds playful, almost slogan-y. I'd use it for tacos or a friend doing you a huge favor, not for some neutral 'truth of the matter' sentence

For the compliment sense, keep the article frozen: eres la neta. Learners try el neto for a man, but Mexican speakers hear that like Ernesto's nickname or just the normal adjective neto.
