Careful using it for real people. In anime chat it can be playful, in normal dating talk it sounds like calling someone unstable or dangerous.

The yan part is from yanderu, not yan as a name. i have seen beginners split it like yan + dere and then wonder who Yan is

Menhera gets mixed up with this a lot. Roughly, menhera is broader unstable or needy behavior, yandere is the love obsession aimed at one person. Not perfect categories, just how people separate the slang.
