Careful with se here. Él no supera la muerte de su madre is fine. Él no se supera la muerte sounds wrong to me, because superarse is more like improve yourself or outdo yourself.

With grief or a breakup, Spanish often uses the perfect: todavía no lo ha superado. Just no supera la ruptura is understandable, but it can sound like you are describing the state from outside, less like normal gossip.

For exams and courses, no supera sounds a bit like school rules or an official notice. A student in Spain is more likely to say he suspendido or no he aprobado. No supera la evaluación is the wording you see in requirements.
