Etymology
Inherited from Old Polish dom, from Proto-Slavic dȍmъ, ultimately from the Indo-European family of words for a house or home.
FAQ
What does dom mean in Polish?
Dom can mean a house, a home, a household or family, and in fixed phrases an institution or business house.
Is dom closer to house or home?
It can be either. A physical dom is a house, while wrócić do domu and tęsknić za domem use the home sense.
Why is it w domu and not w dom?
W domu uses the locative singular after w when the meaning is location at home or in the house.
What does dom dziecka mean?
Dom dziecka means a children's home or orphanage, not a literal child house.
Where does dom come from?
Dom is inherited from Old Polish and Proto-Slavic, with older Indo-European relatives connected with the idea of house or home.

Polish dom and Czech dům are my favourite Slavic freebie, until Polish asks for domu/domem/domowi lol

u mnie w domu confused me for months. My teacher used it about her flat, her parents rules, and sometimes just 'where I live'. not always a detached house

If you want Home Sweet Home on a sign, Dom słodki dom sounds translated in a bad way. The Polish saying people actually reach for is Wszędzie dobrze, ale w domu najlepiej. Longer, but it lands.

Genealogy people trip on z domu a lot. Anna Kowalska, z domu Nowak means nee Nowak, not that she is literally from some Nowak house. You also see the short form z d. on older pages and cemetery stuff.
